I bought this power strip cover to protect my toddler from the power strip we have under a chest in our living room. The design is sturdy and fits our power strip perfectly, it is also easy to put together. But it has two big minuses:

1. Its height. The wires can bend but this is about 1 inch higher than the plugs, so if you want this to go under a piece of furniture you may want to consider whether it fits under or not. It barely fits under our chest.
2. THE REAL ISSUE: The width of the slot through which the cables come out. MY TODDLER’s HAND AND A PORTION OF HIS ARM fit through the slot perfectly, so he can reach the outlets AND the switch of the power cord. What is the point of this item? We just hope, at this point, that it will be a further discouragement–and since the piece is all but wedged under the chest, we will get to him before he can pull the thing close enough to stick his little hand in. Hopefully we’ll find something better soon.

You can presumably use it by covering every unused outlet in the cord with outlet covers. Although the toddler will be able to reach in, he will probably not have the strength or dexterity to pull out the outlet covers while his hand movements are limited by this shell. This, of course, would not stop him/her from turning the switch off–in our case, this means resetting the clock and being without a phone for however long it takes us to notice the deed, among other bothers.

In summary: buy it only if you mean to attach it to the wall. And if you are planning to do the wall, keep in mind that this is pretty big–like attaching a 1L bottle of soda to your wall, only it is a solid, ugly off-white contraption with wires spewing off it.

The K2 is a wonderfully useful toy. I originally bought it so that I could read the love-and-war novel I had published on Kindle, A Dream of Heaven by Michael FitzGordon. However, I found that I could download numerous popular classics for free! One can be a walking library with thousands of books at one’s fingertips. The first few times I downloaded books I thought it wasn’t working, and then I realized that it was so fast that it had already completed the download! I’m a geek and lover of words, and I like to look things up. A dictionary and Wikipedia are at my fingertips wherever I am. It is true that paper books are wonderfully hardy, and one can beat them up and neglect them. However, the reading experience on a Kindle is unquestionably superior, and the wave of the future, because one can adjust the fonts and make bookmarks and notes. No more squinting at tiny fonts. One’s place is automatically saved, which doesn’t happen with a paper book. You can in no way easily search a paper book for terms. K2 will even read the book to you aloud! All the luddites are proclaiming their love for old-fashioned paper books. I love old-fashioned paper books too. But the truth is that a good e-reader like the K2 is a much more pleasant experience in ways that paper books cannot even touch! I still have a few candles in my home, but I use electric lights almost 100% of the time. Paper books will soon be like candles. Yes, you will have a few in your home, but you will almost never use them.

I do not live in the USA but love to read, I had bought many books but was tired of paying expensive shippings and custom taxes. Now, I can have almost immediate access to any book I want without the waiting and added expenses. Very good purchase. I even have a magazine subscription which if I didnt have the kindle could not read. Great!!!!

Substantive opinions about Noam Chomsky aside, let me first say that this was an incredibly low quality documentary with very little in the way of production value. There are several black frames interspersed throughout the film for no apparent reason and the Japanese songs that make up its soundtrack are just plain weird. There’s also no central narration and what it amounts to is just a sequence of clips with Mr. Chomsky speaking in his ultra-confident, detached, and low intensity voice. No unifying theme is presented and the topics stray from WWII to Nicaragua to Turkey to Israel to Britain to 9/11, but, of course, even if it is not directly stated his viewpoint can be summarized as full-time anti-Americanism. Basically, in Chomsky’s mind, we’re the real terrorists so we don’t have the right to respond once we’re attacked. That’s a pretty accurate summary of this icon’s opinions. Chomsky made important contributions to linguistics many years ago but has said little of substance since. He thinks he is being very clever when he says that you can’t have a War on Terror, but of course you can as we can hunt down members of groups who have declared war against us and/or take responsibility for terrorist acts. Bono thinks that he’s a rebel without a pause, but Chomsky’s a faux rebel. There’s no danger in being a citizen in American and hating your own country. Chomsky’s been doing it for 40 years and nothing’s ever happened to him and nothing ever will.
