I know that this book is extremely popular, and I’m definitely not one to believe that censorship is the key to healthy children, but I was amazed and troubled by this book, and by the fact that it’s on many school reading lists.

Within the first couple of chapters the reader is introduced to the main character who favors a body guard that is trained to kill, tortures and drugs an alcoholic fairy (yes, I understand the humor of it, but I’m not sure it’s a good message to send to kids), and is the youngest member of a family with a long criminal history. Artemis has no redeeming qualities, and he is, as one reviewer put it, “a nasty little boy.” Definitely not someone I want my daughter looking up to. If this was a book for teens I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but there is no way my kid is going to read it before the age of thirteen.

I bought this book for book club. It was the best sounding of the choices offered and our vote was unanimous for The Help. I really was not expecting much. Boy was I surprised! This was definitely a hard to put down page turner! I was hooked almost from the beginning. The characters are so easy to relate to! I didn’t see how a white lady was going to be able to write with the voices of civil rights era black women from the South. I was wrong. The women are easy to bond with and as the reader I could feel the pain and outrage and acceptance and fear of being a black woman in a white man’s home & world. Just as in the book, as a white woman I had pre-conceived notions as to how this book told thru a black woman’s eyes would progress. I am so glad I read it! I encourage everyone to reach out of their safety margin and read this novel!

Like (probably) most folks who read this book, it was jammed down my throat as Required! Reading! in my Honors English class in High School (I guess they saved it for the Honors class because we were all Ivy-bound brilliants who wouldn’t be seduced into the gutter by all the naughty language and behavior depicted in the book).

Why?

Since when was rebellion for its own sake considered radical in the literary sense?

Reading this book was like getting stuck on the last commuter bus home next to a drunken, rambling teenager.

Its style may have been “radical” for its time, but it’s neither interesting nor particularly well-written. I have no idea why this is considered a “classic.”

To me, an example of a “classic” is something like Frank Herbert’s “Dune”–even though it was written back in the 60’s, before the lunar landing, it still remains an epic story in and of itself, even with the science fiction aspects removed. “Catcher” on the other hand is more of a period piece, and makes for boring reading, like most of the Bronte sisters’ works which we were also required to slog through (oooh, Edwardian social mores, and written by a WOMAN! How RADICAL and RELEVANT!! not….).

In short, this book for me sums up everything that’s wrong with the way that English-language literature is taught in school. No, we shouldn’t let kids read the funnies and the White Pages and call it literacy, but there has been enough new stuff in the past 40 years to push out some of the no-longer relevant stuff.

This is my second ipod. My first was a third generation ipod Nano, which worked flawlessly for over two years. After those two years, I was feeling a little bored with my 8gig Nano, though it still functioned perfectly, so I went out and splurged on the ipod Touch 3rd generation. I was weary, as I heard battery life on these were short, and they had a tendency to die spontaneously, so I also purchased a $35 two-year warranty plan with the ipod. When I got home, I was incredibly happy right away. For anyone who has had an ipod in the past, syncing your content is the the same as before. For new users, all you need is itunes. Some have complained about itunes being the only way to add content to ipods, but this hasn’t really burdened me in any way. If you don’t want to use itunes for listening to music on your computer, simply download another media manager and just use itunes for syncing your ipod.

But I have spent far more time using the ipod’s Wi-Fi capabilities for internet browsing and downloading apps. Speaking of apps, it’s quite an endless spectrum. I have downloaded many apps, from games, to a GPS system, to virtual comic books. The capabilities are nearly endless. If you can imagine it, there is probably an app for it. The web browsing is quick and simple. The only complaint I have is that the screen will sometimes go from vertical to horizontal or vice versa when I didn’t intend for it to happen. As annoying as this is, it’s easily fixed by slanting the ipod back in the other direction.

As for battery life, it highly depends on what you’re doing. When listening to music, it lasts a long time. When browsing the web, watching videos, or playing games, the battery seems to just get away from you. I wouldn’t have minded if they had made this unit a bit heavier if that meant a heftier battery, but to me it’s a minor complaint. There are many things you can do to preserve battery life. Make sure to turn off Wi-Fi or bluetooth when not using them, and turn the

This is a sturdy bag that is huge! I bought it for long tools and this fits the bill. All construction is durable and the only plastic is the zipper-all other parts are metal. Six big pockets on the outside and 9 slit pockets on one side of the inside with divider(w/velcro fastener). Great product that should be made in America.

I enjoyed EYES WIDE SHUT immensely and rate it at 6 stars out of a possible 5! As is the case with most Kubrick films, every time I see it I find a new and interesting interpretation. This film made brilliant use of light, color, texture, as well as sound and haunting music. All of the major screen performances were also excellent and very interesting.

I remember first watching this film on a whim with my wife one snowey evening on late night television. We knew nothing about this film except for it being a Kubrick production. It was a haunting experience, and we stayed up into the late hours of the evening watching the movie. It was a very, very strange film.

Although I still don’t think I get it all, the film involved: relationships between men and woman and attempts to question what it is that both genders seek from each other beyond the obvious. It partially provides answers about the similarites and differences between these two while telling the story under somewhat threatening circumstances to get our attention.

I am not certain of exactly what this film was trying to say about marriage, but know I will not tire of trying to learn this with repeated screenings. This was Kubrick’ s last film as he died just after the first public screenings. His family and friends noted that he appeared relieved after the release of the film as though the outcome might have weighed heavily on his mind.

Kubrick asked Steven Spielberg to direct AI, a long term project of his, which he intentionally postponed after he realized great technological changes would soon enable this film to be assembled much more effectively. Kubrick apparently wished this new film to be directed by another trusted and very capable individual. In my mind the fact that Kubric could step back and request another individual perhaps better equipped to bring his idea to the screen, is ample evidence of Kubrick’s greatness.
